Special People | Special Food
The Specialty Crop Farm sits on five rural acres in the southeastern corner of South Dakota. We are a farmstead committed to sowing a meaningful life for special people, of all abilities. We cultivate community through farm experiences and special food.
Welcome to the Farm

Co-founders Katie and Chris Zuraff have been dreaming of a place where people with developmental and intellectual disabilities (ID/DD) can sow meaning into their lives and cultivate job and life skills through agriculture for more than 20 years.
The dream was planted at a young age for Katie, who grew up in a special needs home. Her degree in special education continued her passion for working with people of all abilities. When the two met in 2003, the dream deepened and became a greater calling in both of their lives.
With the purchase of the farm in 2021, that dream begin to take shape. The Specialty Crop LCC was established in 2023 with The Specialty Crop Collaborative quickly on its heels in 2024. The summer of 2024 saw the first farmers with ID/DD in volunteer positions. The crew worked together on the farm to learn job skills and life skills.
From there, programming, infrastructure and funding have taken off. Follow along as the farm continues to grow!

Programs
Programs are the heart of the farm. They allow us to put our beliefs about people with disabilities into practice and share our passions for regenerative farming. The dynamic programs at Specialty Crop are designed to deepen meaning, assume competence, promote advocacy, and teach sustainability by fostering hands-on engagement, cultivating a deeper understanding of agricultural systems, empowering participants to champion sustainable practices, and equipping them with the job and life skills to live a more sustainable and meaningful life. Learn more about the programs we have to offer for people of all ages with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
